Ho Chi Minh City proposed that three network operators jointly develop and pilot 6G

The content was sent by the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City to corporations and corporations with the goal of researching and developing 6G technology and piloting it in some areas of the city. This is a specific step to implement Plan 27 of the Steering Committee on the development of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation of the city, implementing Resolution 57 of the Politburo on breakthrough development of science, technology and national digital transformation.

According to the plan, the Department of Science and Technology is assigned to preside over the task of researching, developing and testing sixth generation (6G) mobile technology in Ho Chi Minh City, and at the same time propose the Ministry of Science and Technology to allow testing in a specific area in the area.

According to the document, the Department had a meeting with mobile telecommunications businesses operating in the city including Military Industry and Telecommunications Group (Viettel), Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and MobiFone Telecommunications Corporation to discuss deployment possibilities.

Business representatives said that 6G is still in the research stage, there is no official technical standard and there are no popular commercial terminals on the market. Network operators are focusing resources on 5G development, with no plans to research and deploy 6G at the member unit level; 6G research is determined at the corporate level.

Therefore, the Department of Science and Technology proposed that three corporations, Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone, research and develop 6G technology in 2026 and coordinate with the Department to pilot 6G coverage in an area in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Science and Technology, by the end of 2025, 4G coverage in the country will reach over 99.8% of the population, and 5G coverage will reach over 91%. Ho Chi Minh City sets a goal of 5G coverage reaching 95% of the population and 100% in large urban areas, high-tech parks, industrial parks, seaports, airports and logistics centers by 2026.

6G is the next generation of mobile networks after 5G, expected to have higher data transmission speeds, extremely low latency, integrating artificial intelligence and satellite connectivity, serving applications such as the Internet of Things, data centers, long-range communication and new generation digital services. However, official 6G technical standards have not yet been issued globally.
