“Away US planes from our bases”, Spain rejects attack on Iran: slap in the face of Trump

Spain distances itself and does not offer support to the action of the United States and Israel against Iran. Madrid’s position pushed the Pentagon to withdraw about ten KC-135 tanker planes deployed at the Moron de la Frontera base, and, to a lesser extent, in Rota, used for air-to-air refueling of fighters. The United States moved the planes to France and Germany. The Spanish Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, underlined that the cooperation agreements, which establish the rules for the permanence of American troops in Spain, prescribe that they “must operate within international legality” while they are now engaged in unilateral actions, without the support of multinational organizations, such as the UN, NATO and the EU. “The bases will not provide support unless it is necessary from a humanitarian point of view,” he added, stressing that until “there is a solution, the treaty will not be applied.”

Each country makes its own foreign policy decisions. Spain has a very clear position: Europe’s voice must be a voice of balance and moderation at this moment, working for de-esclation and for us to return to the negotiating table”, said the Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares. “A logic of violence like the one we are experiencing leads to a spiral of violence and unilateral military actions outside the United Nations Charter, outside of any action, no one has a clear objective. Europe must defend international law, de-escalation and negotiations.”

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed himself with a tweet: “In the last few hours, Iran has attacked Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait and Oman. We strongly condemn all illegal and indiscriminate attacks against the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and other countries in the region. We also condemn the launch of missiles by Hezbollah and Israel’s attack on Lebanon”, he wrote, underlining that “violence only generates more violence”, without go into detail in relation to the Iberian position. Sanchez added that ”the bombs hit military targets, but they also hit roads, airports, schools and the homes of innocent civilians. It is necessary to immediately interrupt this spiral and return to the framework of diplomacy and dialogue”.
