Genetic factors, hormones, the body’s metabolism, and lifestyle directly affect and can slow down the weight loss process.

Genetics

Genes can influence many aspects of weight management, including metabolic rate, appetite, and the ability to feel full after eating. Some genetic disorders such as Prader-Willi syndrome can cause increased hunger and a tendency to overeat, making weight control more difficult. However, these cases are not common.

Hormone

Hormone fluctuations can affect hunger, metabolic rate and body fat distribution. For example, a decline in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause is associated with increased abdominal fat accumulation, although weight gain during this period is often due to a combination of factors.

Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, is chronically elevated and can promote fat storage. Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates hunger, while leptin helps create a feeling of fullness after eating. An imbalance between these hormones can affect weight. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and plays a role in regulating blood sugar. When the body becomes insulin resistant, the risk of fat storage may increase.

Transformation

Metabolism is the process by which the body converts food into energy. Basal metabolic rate often decreases with age, especially as muscle mass declines, making weight control more difficult. Many other factors also influence this process, including physical activity level, muscle mass and body fat percentage.

Lifestyle factors

Lifestyle plays an important role in weight control. Sedentary habits, sitting for long periods of time, and a diet high in sweets, fast food, and processed foods can increase total energy intake. In addition, consuming a lot of alcohol or sugary drinks, lack of sleep and prolonged stress can affect hormones that regulate hunger and fullness, thereby increasing the risk of weight gain.

Mental health

Mental health can affect weight in many ways. Prolonged stress can lead to emotional eating, while also disrupting sleep and changing hormones that regulate hunger and fullness.

Depression or fatigue can reduce motivation to exercise and participate in daily activities. Certain biochemical changes in the body, such as serotonin fluctuations, can affect appetite, especially for carbohydrate-rich foods.

Pathology

Weight gain is a side effect of some medications such as psychiatric, diabetes, and epilepsy medications. In addition, some medical conditions can make weight loss difficult such as Cushing’s syndrome, heart failure, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), kidney disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, and sleep apnea.
