ChatGPT hits 900 million users

The new announcement shows that ChatGPT is getting closer to the one billion user mark. The growth rate of chatbots is also considered impressive when in February 2025, the number of weekly users is 400 million and by September 2025 reaches 700 million.

According to OpenAI, users choose ChatGPT to learn, write, plan and build. “As usage increases, the product also improves in ways that users can immediately feel such as faster response, greater reliability, good security and more stable performance,” the company said.

ChatGPT currently has more than 9 million business users, a fourfold increase compared to September 2025, and more than 50 million paid individual users. “Registrations accelerated significantly at the beginning of the year, with January and February on track to become the largest months for new registrations in history,” OpenAI revealed.

In early February, the company confirmed that it is testing displaying ads in the free version of ChatGPT and the Go package in the US, while the Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education packages remain ad-free. The company said this move increases users’ access to advanced AI tools without having to pay extra. Responding to concerns related to user experience, OpenAI affirms that ads will not affect the answers the chatbot provides, and will not share the content of users’ conversations with advertisers.

Meanwhile, OpenAI competitor Anthropic revealed that the number of free users of its Claude chatbot has increased by 60% since January, while the number of paid subscribers has doubled. The company even used commercials during the American football Super Bowl to mock the idea of ​​​​putting ads in OpenAI’s chatbot, mentioning that a seemingly useful conversation suddenly turned into a forced sales pitch, ending with the slogan: “Advertising is coming to AI, but it won’t come to Claude”.

In addition to the increased number of users, OpenAI also announced it had raised $110 billion in private investment, marking one of the largest private funding rounds in history. The new investment includes $50 billion from Amazon, $30 billion from Nvidia, and $30 billion from SoftBank.

The funding round is still ongoing and OpenAI expects more investors to participate. The company is currently valued at 730 billion USD, a sharp increase compared to 500 billion USD in the secondary capital raising round last October.
