Vietnamese network operator recognized as ‘Best 5G in Southeast Asia’

VinaPhone is recognized by Ookla as having the best 5G network in Southeast Asia, surpassing many major carriers such as Singtel and Unifi.

Certificate of “Best 5G Network Award in Vietnam and SEA” (Best 5G network in Vietnam and Southeast Asia), awarded by Ookla to VinaPhone at the global mobile exhibition MWC 2026 in Barcelona on March 3.

Ookla is the world’s leading unit in the field of Internet speed testing, famous for its Speedtest tool used by hundreds of millions of people. Founded in 2006, Ookla is headquartered in the US and operates independently, providing objective data based on billions of measurements each year. Ookla’s reputation comes from transparent measurement methods, big data, and in-depth analysis capabilities by region, device, and time. Many countries and organizations, including Vietnam, use Ookla results as a reliable measure of network performance.

With the 5G network, Ookla uses the Speedtest Connectivity Score connection index, which is made up of three main groups of criteria including: speed score (overall speed and response, accounting for 50% of the total score), web browsing (access performance, website loading, 25%) and video streaming (quality, smoothness when watching online videos, 25%).

In the results measured in the second half of 2025, VinaPhone’s 5G network score reached 83.6, higher than the second network operator, Singapore’s Singtel (83 points), and also surpassing many large networks such as Unifi (Malaysia), AIS (Thailand).

“Our testing method ensures that this is an objective demonstration of VinaPhone’s outstanding performance in the market,” said Mr. Stephen Bye, President and General Director of Ookla.

Announced last August, VinaPhone also ranked second in the world in 5G speed, according to Ookla’s rankings, while Viettel was among the three fastest mobile networks in the world.

VinaPhone is the second network operator in Vietnam to commercialize 5G network by the end of 2024, after Viettel. This network operator is “committed to making 5G an essential digital infrastructure, serving from smart manufacturing to comprehensive smart cities”.

Meanwhile, parent group VNPT also said it will carry out radio network planning for VinaPhone 5G network based on modern traffic forecasting models, analyzing user density in each area, to select the optimal station location in terms of coverage, capacity and long-term scalability. During deployment, each 5G station is subjected to multi-layer testing with real-life usage scenarios such as high-density data access, livestreaming, gaming and high-resolution video transmission.
