The missing Rembrandt painting ended up in a Dutch museum

According to the researchers, the signature is original and the wooden panel is from the correct period.

Rembrandt was a painter who lived in the 17th century. Zechariah’s vision in the temple was removed from the artist’s catalog of works in 1960. The following year, the painting was sold to a private collector, after which the work disappeared for decades.

The painting resurfaced when its current owners presented the painting to a museum, where it was studied for two years.

Director of the Rijksmuseum Taco Dibbits told the BBC that the museum receives many e-mails from people asking for information about paintings they have inherited or bought. A photo of a possible Rembrandt painting sent to the museum immediately piqued the interest of the museum’s curator.

“We’ve known about the painting for over a hundred years, but we’ve never seen it,” says Dibbits.

Found the painting contains all the hallmarks of Rembrandt’s “peak phase” at the beginning of his career, Dibbits says in an interview with the BBC.

“It’s of a very high quality. Sometimes with Rembrandt’s portraits you feel like he produces a huge amount, but in this painting you really feel like he put his soul into it.”

The work depicts a biblical scene where the archangel Gabriel visits the high priest Zechariah to inform him that he will have a son, John the Baptist.

The museum curator Jonathan Bikkerin according to the work has many characteristics typical of Rembrandt, such as layering and the darkness of the work.

“Light is also very important. Typically for Rembrandt, of course, it’s about the contrast of light and shadow,” Bikker tells AFP.

The museum received the painting on long-term loan from a private collector, and it will be available for public viewing at the museum from Wednesday.
