Harvey Weinstein back in court in April

Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein will be back in court in New York from April. Judge Curtis Farber decided at a court in New York that a charge on which the jury was unable to reach agreement in the previous trial should be retried from April 14th.

The 73-year-old was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 for rape and criminal sexual acts. However, the guilty verdict was surprisingly overturned in 2024 due to procedural errors.

The reopened trial ended last summer with a split verdict and a divided jury: The jury saw it as proven that Weinstein had committed serious sexual crimes against a woman. The jury found him not guilty on another count of serious sexual crimes against a second woman. The jury was unable to agree on a third count relating to rape – the trial for this is now scheduled for April.

Into the new process with a new legal team

To this end, Weinstein, who was in serious health trouble and appeared at the hearing again in a wheelchair, hired a new legal team that had already defended, among others, former rap star Sean “Diddy” Combs and Luigi Mangione, who was accused of murdering an insurance boss in the middle of Manhattan.

In 2023, Weinstein was sentenced to 16 additional years in prison in a separate criminal case in California. The prosecution also accused him of sexual assault there. His defense has appealed this verdict.
