Biathlon – Ruhpolding applies for World Cup sport

The German Ski Association (DSV) and the municipality of Ruhpolding intend to apply to host the Biathlon World Championships. The basis is a local council resolution that was recently passed with a large majority. Since the DSV is currently pushing forward the application for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2031, an application for Ruhpolding is only possible in 2032 or 2033 at the earliest.

DSV President Jörg Flechtner welcomes the signal from Chiemgau. “This is a strong and important commitment to biathlon in Germany,” says Flechtner. With a view to the 2023 World Championships in Oberhof, he says, Germany has recently proven its organizational strength. Hermann Hipf, President of the Ruhpolding Organizing Committee, speaks of an opportunity for the town and region. “A World Cup provides lasting impetus for infrastructure, tourism and international visibility. We are pleased about the constructive dialogue with the DSV and want to continue on this path together.”

According to a statement from the ski association, “the DSV and the community will now use the next two years together to develop a viable and sustainable concept and coordinate the next steps in the process.” In the next few months it will also be decided whether Oberstdorf’s application for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2031 is successful. This result will influence whether Ruhpolding applies for 2032, 2033 or both years. The Biathlon World Federation will make the decision about awarding the 2032 and 2033 World Championships in autumn 2028. Ruhpolding has already hosted Biathlon World Championships several times, most recently in 2012.
