Fortnite returns to Google Play, new rules for developers

The fulcrum of the agreement lies in the new “Registered App Stores program”, an initiative designed to streamline the process of installing software external to the official circuit. By overcoming the controversial security warnings that have long hindered so-called sideloading, Google will allow third-party marketplaces that meet certain quality standards to operate more smoothly. The immediate result of this détente is the reinstatement of Fortnite into the global Play Store catalog, accompanied by the debut of the Epic Games Store on Android as an autonomous and fully legitimized entity.

While Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, welcomed the change, describing Android’s evolution towards a truly open platform, the scope of the reform will gradually extend on a global scale until September 2027. The decision marks a clear divergence from Apple’s strategy, which is still engaged in complex legal challenges to maintain control over its value chain. For Google, the challenge now shifts to the ability to retain content creators through new incentive programs, seeking a difficult balance between the protection of the operating system and the free competition required by international regulators.
