Apple Music provides the music industry with transparency labels on AI-generated content

Apple Music has introduced a set of metadata that identifies the content generated with artificial intelligence tools that must be applied by record labels and music distributors.

The streaming platform has launched what it calls ‘transparency labels’ (Transparency Tags) with which the elements that have been created with AI will be identified, which covers the static or motion graphic art of the album, the generation of a material part of the sound recording, the composition and the video content.

The labels address record labels and distributorswhich can now begin to apply them both to content already published on Apple Music and to new content, as explained by the company in a newsletter distributed to industry partners, which are included in Music Business Worldwide. Several labels can even be applied together.

Apple believes that “labels and distributors must take an active role in reporting when the content they offer is created using AI“, and that the labeling provides “a first concrete step towards the transparency necessary for the industry to establish best practices and policies that work for everyone.” However, it leaves it to their discretion what they qualify as content generated by artificial intelligence.
