Merz sees the preservation of a future Iranian state as necessary in the face of its possible collapse in a long-term war.

The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, warned this Friday of the enormous danger that a long war in Iran would represent, understanding that no one would gain either from the prolongation of the conflict or “from a possible collapse of the Iranian State.”

Merz has indicated that the German government shares the objectives of the United States and Israel, as long as they are directed against Iran’s nuclear and missile program and the Iranian threat to Israel and its neighbors. However, and although “the Iranian people have the right to decide their own destiny,” the risks continue to increase as the days go by.

“The guiding principle must be a regional peace agreement,” said the German Chancellor, with guarantees for the security and existence of all States, including Israel and the Gulf countries, but “Iran must not become the scene of indirect wars, and the Iranian State, as such, must continue to function,” he warned.

Public order and basic services must be maintained in Iran: “We also want to avoid uncontrolled migration from Iran,” added the chancellor, before asking the international community not to repeat a scenario of entrenched conflict such as in Syria, a country where years of civil war forced millions of people to abandon their homes and flee to Europe at the beginning of the last decade, many of them to Germany.
