The Pope appoints Msgr. Gabriele Caccia apostolic nuncio to the USA: who he is

Monsignor Caccia said he was “honored and deeply grateful for the Holy Father’s decision” to appoint him nuncio to the country and the Church in which the Pope himself “was born and raised”. Caccia – the Vatican media report – welcomes the new “mission with joy and trepidation: a mission at the service of communion and peace”. The new nuncio feels “encouraged by the warmth and openness” that he has already experienced from the local Church, the people and the institutions of this country that he has gotten to know during his years of service at the United Nations.

An eminent Vatican diplomat who collaborated with Cardinal Pietro Parolin in the Secretariat of State, Caccia completed his education in the environment of Villa Nazareth with Cardinal Achille Silvestrini.

Titular Archbishop of Sepino, the Italian bishop leaves the position he held since 2019 as Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations to New York to take on one of the most important offices in the entire pontifical diplomacy.

Born in Milan on 24 February 1958, Caccia was ordained priest on 11 June 1983 by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. His appointment as archbishop dates back to 16 July 2009 and was desired by Benedict XVI who consecrated him bishop on 12 September 2009.

Caccia was previously councilor for general affairs of the Secretariat of State from 2002 to 2009, when Pietro Parolin was Undersecretary for relations with States of the Secretariat of State. He was subsequently sent as nuncio to Lebanon from 2009 to 2017, then to the Philippines from 2017 to 2019.
