WWE 2K26: The freedom to tell your story in the ring

Well the wait is finally over – WWE 2K26, the official annual simulation game of the professional wrestling giant WWE, is officially out = and this year it feels more alive than ever.

Full disclosure first, I’ve been playing the wrestling games for about as long as I’ve been watching the product on TV, since the cable and satellite METV days. I’ve seen the best (Here Comes the Pain), and endured the worst (2K20). But there is no doubt that in recent years something good has happened to the product, which every year also adds life-optimizing features that significantly improve the experience, important types of battles and, above all, improves the feeling of freedom that the player gets to create his personal WWE world.

Let’s start with the main gameplay changes. You won’t feel too many changes from last year, which is a good thing. But there are improvements that make the battles more authentic and calculated. What’s more, the AI has improved significantly and is much more responsive and thoughtful.

And for dessert my favorite addition: three stages of hell, where each round is held under different rules (for example: normal battle, ladder battle and cage battle and more and more).

CM PUNK

The second mod that allows you to create a player and take him on a journey is MyRISE, which this year underwent its biggest transformation since the mod was launched, focusing on a much more personal and cinematic narrative. This year the mod is split into two completely separate experiences (the men’s lane and the women’s lane), allowing players to build their legacy in different ways. Despite the massive improvement in the ability to play the mod again with the plot changes, the option to roam freely and feel the atmosphere is still missing.

Another mod that returns with improvements, although not massive changes, is the GM mod, where you can be the “boss” of any brand. This year you can run 50-week seasons, use more types of battles (including intergender battles), and draft much deeper (more on that too).

The last mod we touched on is the Universe Mode, the famous heatbox that gives you full control over everything: the plans, the roster, the rivalries, everything. So unfortunately we didn’t get new videos for the rivalries, and we didn’t get 3 or more person rivalries. But we did get an extension of the promos, including an interview after the fight which is not bad at all. The highlight of the Yunbirs is the draft – which brings a little new life to the concept. But still need more content otherwise this mod will die soon.

Now, before finishing, you must touch the big elephant in the room, and it’s called RINGSIDE PASS. In fact the game, like many others, has switched to a Seasons mod instead of a direct DLC download. It means that every few games we will accumulate enough XP and we can open a character or another reward. If we are in premium we will get an equal character and for free we will get one of the prizes that we used to get in previous years by playing in different mods (like the Hogan from the 90s or an old championship belt). This year everything is in ring pass, so if the character you want is high on tier 40, there are two options to play until you collect enough XP to reach 40, or pay more extra to get what you already paid extra for. I personally will wait until the end of the season, to see how much really new content we got, to decide if this transition helps players save and get more or not.

In conclusion, and if we put aside the DLC issue, the game is not just another roster update. WWE 2k26 has made a significant leap forward in terms of the player’s freedom of action. Whether you want to manage the organization behind the scenes, recreate history with CM Punk, or simply slam opponents into a trash can – the game gives you all the tools to create your story with almost no limits.
