Spain will not participate in the military mission in the Strait of Hormuz: ‘It is an illegal war…’

Spain will not participate in any military mission in the Strait of Hormuz because it considers the American-Israeli war against Iran to be illegal, the defense and foreign ministers said in Madrid on Monday. Left coalition government led by the Prime Minister Pedra Sancheza she criticized the attack by the USA and Israel and banned American military planes from using bases in the south of Spain for actions against Iran.

Minister of Defense Margaret Robles she rejected the request of the American president Donald Trump for military support in securing the waterway blocked by Tehran for oil tanker traffic.

“Spain is not currently considering any mission in the Strait of Hormuz because it is an illegal war in which there are many dead. The goal must be to end the war, and immediately,” said Robles in an address to the media.

Trump previously warned of a “very bad future” for NATO allies who do not join the action in the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation in the strait is of serious concern to Europe, but the position of the European Union should be that the war must end regardless of economic circumstances, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Manuel Albares.

“We must not do anything that would further increase the tension or lead to a further escalation of the situation,” he told reporters in Brussels.

Some EU members, such as Germany, Italy or Greece, have also indicated that they will not join military operations in the strait, while others, including Denmark, have not yet made a decision.
