The weather was to blame for the delay: Last autumn, construction workers began working on behalf of the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office to make Paulsenstrasse at the foot of the Fichtenberg safer for children and adults walking and cycling. But because the weather didn’t fit into the construction plan, construction work stalled. Now, in spring-like temperatures, the work is starting again, as the office announced. For residents this means in the coming weeks: Full closure.
Paulsenstrasse, which lies between Grunewaldstrasse and Schildhornstrasse, is already a traffic-calmed zone, However, people drive too fast there: The street is a popular secret route between Steglitz Town Hall and Breitenbachplatz. With elevations on the street, so-called Berlin cushions, and extensions to the sidewalk, traffic is intended to be slowed down and made clearer on the other. At the same time, the parking spaces will be newly marked and signposted. The civil engineering department is also using the work to repair the asphalt surface in the intersection of Paulsenstrasse and Forststrasse.

The measures are now calming down the traffic-calmed area “actually”said Transport City Councilor Urban Aykal (Greens) at the start of the construction project. “These measures serve young and old alike.” There are on Paulsenstrasse and in its immediate vicinity several retirement homes and offersthe Flemmingstrasse youth leisure facility and two daycare centers.
Citizens and officials developed ideas together
The ideas on how Paulsenstrasse could be made safer were developed in… Dialogue with local residents born. In June 2023, the district office invited people to the Paulsenstrasse participation workshop. At two thematic tables, the neighbors discussed the problem and possible measures to solve it with City Councilor Aykal and the administration. Two and a half years later, the construction workers arrived for the first time; The work should be completed by the third anniversary of the citizens’ workshop.
Paulsenstrasse is now between Grunewaldstrasse and Rückertstrasse completely blocked. The construction site will move on in two weeks: from March 30th to April 10th, the intersection with the forest road will be renovated – there will then be no passage on the road. Then the “Berlin cushions” are supposed to make lawn impossible.
