Donald Trump describes Emmanuel Macron’s response to his request for help to unblock the Strait of Hormuz as “not perfect”

Donald Trump increases pressure on his allies. This Monday, March 16, the American president announced that he had met with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Donald Trump has asked his allies to provide help to secure the strategic maritime canal, still blocked by Iranian forces.

He explained that he expected France and the United Kingdom to respond favorably to this call but that the French president’s reaction was “not perfect” although encouraging. “On a scale of 0 to 10, he’s an 8. Not perfect. But it’s France! We don’t expect perfection (…) I think it will help,” he said about Emmanuel Macron, without specifying the content of this exchange.

Concerning the United Kingdom, Donald Trump said with certainty: “I think they will get involved, they should get involved” while London dismissed, this Monday, a NATO intervention in the region.

“They should jump to help us”

During his speech at the White House, the Republican billionaire more generally pointed out the lack of enthusiasm of his allies in the face of his request for aid. “We’ve been protecting you for forty years and you don’t want to get involved in something very minor,” he said. We strongly encourage other countries to get involved with us, and to get involved quickly and with great enthusiasm.”

Beyond the United Kingdom, Germany also ruled out any NATO mission this Monday to restore maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, Japan and Australia, historic allies of the United States in the Indo-Pacific region, ruled out any sending of assets to this area.

Stung, Donald Trump assured: “We don’t need anyone,” while adding, regarding NATO countries in particular: “They should jump to help us, because we have been helping them for years. »
