Germany came away empty-handed when it came to allocating venues for the next Ice Hockey World Cup in 2028. The national tournament organized by the NHL will take place in Edmonton, Calgary and Prague in two years. The North American professional league announced this on Monday. The final of the so-called World Cup of Hockey, in which, in contrast to the annual world championship of the world association IIHF, the participating nations can rely on all their best players from the NHL, is to be held in Edmonton.
Russia’s participation not excluded
According to deputy NHL boss Bill Daly, there had previously been as many location applications from no other European country as from Germany. This is where the NHL wants to gain a foothold in the coming years and will play several seasonal games.
The tournament is the fourth edition of the World Cup of Hockey after 1996, 2004 and 2016. Eight nations are expected to take part in two years. Germany is considered a promising candidate. According to NHL boss Gary Bettman, Russia’s participation is not ruled out either. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Russian teams have not yet taken part in tournaments organized by the IIHF world association.
