Trump highlights “good relationship” with Beijing; I would go in six weeks

Washington. US President Donald Trump said he expected to travel to China in just over a month, having postponed his visit due to his war with Iran.

“We have a very good working relationship with China, so we will go in about five or six weeks,” he told reporters.

Trump commented on Sunday to Financial Times that he could postpone his trip if China did not help unblock the Strait of Hormuz.

He added that he asked Beijing for a postponement “of a month or so,” but this time he claimed that he had to remain in the United States because of the war in the Middle East.

Beijing responded yesterday that it “took note” of Washington’s clarifications and that it would remain in contact with the US administration about the visit.

Preparations for this trip take months; The goal is for Trump to meet with his counterpart Xi Jinping and manage to permanently defuse the trade war between the largest world powers.

However, the conflict in the Middle East has disrupted both the agenda and the relationship between both governments.

The Republican has pressured his allies, but also China, to help him restore maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, blocked by Iran and key to global oil transit.
