A man has been arrested for breaking into the enclosure of a famous pygmy hippopotamus at a Thai zoo.

Surveillance video shows a man wearing a black beanie, sunglasses, green tank top and brown shorts approaching Mu Deng and her mother Jonah with a tablet, allegedly filming videos or taking photos. He was inside the enclosure for one or two minutes until zoo staff noticed him, and the man did not try to escape until the police arrived. The man was initially charged with trespassing, the investigation is ongoing and the zoo intends to pursue all possible legal avenues. The suspect’s name has not been released. The man was released on bail. Narongwit stressed that Mu Deng and Jonah were safe as the man did not harm them.

In an official statement, the zoo said the animals were a bit scared and would be closely monitored by a veterinarian. Visitors are also urged to strictly adhere to the rules and instructions of the staff for the safety of themselves and the animals.

Mu Deng has become popular since her birth in 2024 thanks to the adorable photos and videos posted by the caretaker. Since then, the hippopotamus has attracted many visitors from Thailand and other countries who want to see and capture the animal’s cute moments.
