The American Embassy in The Hague issued a security warning to US citizens in the Netherlands, following a series of explosions that recently occurred in the country and in other major cities throughout Europe. The renewed warning comes after a series of targeted attacks against Jewish institutions, including synagogues and schools, as well as explosions in the Zaudas business district in Amsterdam.
The embassy warns against the ongoing risk posed by terrorist organizations, and asks travelers to be especially vigilant. “Terrorist organizations continue to plan possible attacks in the Netherlands,” the statement said, noting that such attacks may occur without prior warning. Among the places to be careful are tourist sites, transportation stations, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, houses of worship, parks, educational institutions and other public places where a crowd may gather.
In addition, the warning indicates the possibility of riots or demonstrations occurring in central countries, including near the US consulate in Amsterdam. The American authorities emphasize in the message the importance of maintaining vigilance and monitoring the local media. It is also recommended to change travel plans if necessary.
The warning comes after a series of events in recent weeks. On March 9, a terrorist organization called Harkat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (Movement of the People of the Muslim Right), claimed responsibility for an explosion at a Jewish school in Amsterdam. A few days later, the organization also took responsibility for setting fire to a synagogue in Rotterdam. The same organization was also accused of an explosion outside an office center in Amsterdam’s Zaudas business district. Despite the great concern created by these attacks, no casualties were reported following the explosions.
According to reports, the explosions were apparently carried out in protest of the war between the US, Israel and Iran, with the messages from the group including statements such as “keep your distance from American and Zionist assets”. The embassy’s warning came at the same time as the US State Department’s “global security” warning, which also mentions the need to avoid disaster-prone areas in Europe, where terrorist organizations have begun attacking Jewish institutions.
The situation in the Netherlands is part of a wider trend of increasing terrorist threats all over Europe. Last week, a similar explosion occurred in Belgium, when a bomb was placed outside a synagogue. The growing fear has led European countries, including Hungary, to raise the threat levels of terrorism in response to the escalation in the Middle East.
