The new 1080p mode solves a major complaint

The main star of the new update is the introduction of “1080p High Quality” mode for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. Although the Portal supported 1080p resolution until now, many users complained about occasional pixelation and artifacts in the image, even with a stable Internet connection. The new mode, as explained on the official PlayStation Blog, uses a higher bitrate to provide a significantly sharper and more stable image, which should significantly reduce visual disturbances. For an optimal experience, an Internet connection of at least 15 Mbps is recommended. The option can be easily activated within the quick menu (Quick Menu), but it is necessary to restart the game session for the change to take effect. This addition is a direct response to the biggest criticism of the device and for many it could be a decisive factor that will raise the gaming experience to a higher level.

Improvements for cloud gaming and easier login

In addition to graphic improvements, the update also brings a number of practical changes that improve the overall user experience. Users who start game bundles through Cloud Streaming will now get a new menu that allows them to directly choose which game from the bundle they want to play. Clear on-screen notifications for game calls have also been introduced, so players will no longer miss calls from friends while in the middle of a session. Trophy fans will be pleased with the new, improved notifications that now display the name and image of the trophy, while platinum trophies will be accompanied by a special animation. In addition, the first application process has been simplified. New users can now create a PlayStation account or sign in to an existing one by scanning a QR code with their mobile phone, shortening the initial setup process that took some up to twenty minutes.

Growing popularity in spite ofč skepticism

This update comes at a time when PlayStation Portal is experiencing impressive growth. According to Sony’s data, the number of monthly users of Cloud Streaming on the Portal increased by 162 percent in January compared to a year earlier. Also, more than 50 percent of all Portal owners are also PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, which indicates a strong interest in cloud gaming. The device, which sold around two million copies by the end of 2024, exceeded many expectations and created a loyal user base, and the latest improvements will surely further strengthen its position on the market.
