Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich and the Association of Banks agreed to cancel the promotion of the law on the introduction of an additional tax on excess profits of banks, promoted by the Ministry of Finance within the framework of the Law on State Regulation.
Instead, the banks will pay the state NIS 3 billion in 2026, and another NIS 250 million in 2027.
Agreement on special payments as an alternative to legislation was reached on Wednesday following a meeting between bank CEOs, the Association of Banks and the Minister of Finance with his team.
At the end of 2025, the banking system recorded a net profit of 32 billion shekels and paid dividends in the amount of 17 billion shekels in the same year.
