KL’s information: Orbán did not bend – Ukraine will not receive a 90 billion subsidy loan

According to information obtained by Kauppalehti from EU meeting sources, the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbania was not made to budge from his negative position on Ukraine on Thursday. This means that Ukraine still does not receive the promised 90 billion euro support loan.

“Hungary’s position is simple. We are ready to support Ukraine when we get our oil, which they have blocked,” Orbán said on Thursday when he arrived at the EU summit.

According to information from Kauppalehti, there will hardly be any more attempts to persuade Orbán to change his position at this meeting.

The impasse stems from the fact that the flow of Russian oil through the Družba oil pipeline in Ukraine to Hungary and Slovakia has been interrupted since the end of January. Hungary and Slovakia have blamed the situation on Ukraine, which in turn has emphasized that the pipeline was damaged by Russian attacks.

According to a diplomatic source, the key to the solution is now that Ukraine allows Russian oil to flow to Hungary, in which case Hungary is ready to support the bailout loan.

Prime minister Petteri Orpo (kok) said on Thursday when he arrived at the summit that Orbán has broken his previous promises because he already approved the loan decision for Ukraine once in December.

According to Orpo, April is a critical moment for Ukraine, when it should have aid money at its disposal.

“If necessary (for Ukraine), bridge financing must be found,” Orpo said in Brussels.
