The US approves “possible” arms sales to Kuwait, the Emirates and Jordan in the midst of the war with Iran

The United States Government has approved “possible” arms sales to the authorities of Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, for a value of more than 15 billion dollars, in the midst of the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, since it launched an offensive against Iran together with Israel.

The State Department has announced a proposed sale of “lower-tier air and missile defense sensor radars” to Kuwait for about $8 billion (about €6.9 billion).

The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has justified the commercialization of weapons by claiming that “there is an emergency that requires the immediate sale to Kuwait”, which “is in the national security interests” of the United States.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of an important non-NATO ally that has been an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” he said in a statement.

With the same premise, the agency has approved a military sale to the United Arab Emirates that includes “the Integrated Defense System against Small, Low and Fixed Unmanned Aircraft (FS-LIDS) and related equipment”, for a cost of 2.1 billion dollars (1,816 million euros) and another of “aircraft, ammunition and related equipment” to Jordan for an estimated value of 70.5 million dollars (almost 61 million euros).

The Department has assured that none of the three proposed sales will have a “negative impact on (its) defense capacity,” on a day in which it has notified Congress about them.

The announcement comes after Iran’s attacks on energy infrastructure in Persian Gulf countries, in response to Israel’s bombing of its gas facilities, which has intensified a war that has already lasted 20 days.
