Iran determined a corridor for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz? ‘They paid a fee of two million dollars’

Iran has determined a “safe” route through its territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz and should soon establish an official procedure for issuing permits to ships in transit, Lloyd’s List, a specialized company, writes in an analysis. At least nine ships exited the Strait of Hormuz through a ‘safe’ corridor through Iranian territorial waters near Larak Island, from which the Iranian Navy and Port Authority are visually assessing them, according to a report by the Marine News and Analysis Company, published on Wednesday.

Several tankers have passed through the strait after Iranian checks and diplomatic interventions, and one operator reportedly paid Iran a $2 million transit fee, according to Lloyd’s List.

According to the company, several countries are negotiating directly with Tehran on plans for transit ships, including India, Pakistan, Iraq, Malaysia and China, and Iranian Revolutionary Guard officials have established a framework system for registering ships to issue guarantees of safe passage.

Tehran took control of the Strait of Hormuz after the American-Israeli attack on February 28, banning the transit of ships connected to the United States, Israel, European countries and their partners.

A spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed earlier this week that Iran had allowed several countries’ ships to pass through the strait, while maritime traffic data showed that Iranian, Indian, Chinese and Greek ships had left the Persian Gulf.

System establishment

Currently, passage through the safe corridor is being negotiated on a case-by-case basis, according to the Lloyd’s List report, but it is expected that the Iranian authorities will establish an official licensing procedure in the coming days.

Tehran will establish a “new regime” for passage through the Strait of Hormuz in order to sanction “powers that strive for dominance” by blocking the passage of their ships, the economic adviser to Iran’s supreme leader said on Thursday.Muhammad Mokhberaccording to a report by the Iranian news agency Mehr.

Lloyd’s List states in its analysis that vessels that want to pass through the approved corridor through the strait must submit ownership and destination information to the Iranian authorities before transit.

“The government and the business sector are currently trying to establish a procedure by which vessels that are definitely not connected to the US and Israel will be able to communicate (with Iranian authorities) and receive confirmation of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz,” Lloyd’s List quoted him as saying. Dimitrisa Maniatisaexecutive director of the marine cargo consultancy Marisks.

Abolition of sanctions?

Permits are currently still being considered on a case-by-case basis, with some governments communicating directly with Iranian authorities to confirm that a particular ship is heading to the Persian Gulf to seek permission for safe passage through the strait, Maniatis said, according to a Lloyd’s List report.

Traffic is still very weak, according to the report, since 15 ships passed through the strait from March 15 to 17, and almost all of them were connected to Iran. In the period from August 1 to 15, only approximately 90 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz, Lloyd’s List Intelligence reported. Last year, in the same period, more than a thousand passed.

At the beginning of the week, the American Minister of Finance Scott Bessant he said that the United States of America has “nothing against” some Iranian, Indian and Chinese ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

We are seeing more and more fuel tankers passing through the strait, including Indian and possibly Chinese ships, Bessent said Monday in an interview with CNBC, according to a Reuters report.

“Iranian ships have been passing through before, and we allowed it so that the rest of the world could be supplied,” Bessent pointed out at the time.

On Thursday, however, the American minister said that Washington could lift sanctions on Iranian oil “stuck” on tankers.

“We could lift the sanctions on Iranian offshore oil in the next few days. It’s about 140 million barrels,” Bessent said on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria.” At the beginning of the month, the USA introduced a 30-day permit for the purchase of Russian oil stored on tankers.
