The US recalls nearly 90,000 bottles of children’s fever-reducing medicine

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that Strides Pharma, headquartered in India, is recalling about 89,592 bottles of Children’s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension fever and pain relief syrup 100 mg/5ml concentration. This batch is produced for the distribution unit Taro Pharmaceuticals USA and is widely supplied throughout the US market, according to Fox Business March 19.

The affected products have 4-ounce bottle packaging (about 118 ml), lot numbers 7261973A and 7261974A, and expiration date January 31, 2027. Taro’s products can be sold as generic drugs or under brand names and private labels of retail systems.

The decision to recall was made after the authorities received many complaints from consumers about the appearance of strange gel-like blocks and black particles inside the drug solution.

The FDA classified this incident as a Group II warning level for violative products that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. The likelihood of serious complications is estimated to be low, but the FDA notes that foreign objects in liquid medicine can pose a risk of choking or suffocation for young children when using it.

It is still unclear the cause of these impurities, as well as the exact number of contaminated medicine bottles and their specific level of harm. To date, there have been no reports of casualties or illnesses related to the above batch of drugs.

Authorities advise consumers who have purchased recalled products to stop using them immediately. In case a child has taken this medicine and shows unusual symptoms, parents need to quickly take the child to a medical facility for timely examination and advice.

This is not the only large-scale recall of painkillers and fever reducers recently. In December, Gold Star Distribution company also had to recall a series of fever-reducing and flu-treating products such as DayQuil, Tylenol, Motrin, Advil… after the FDA discovered evidence of the presence of rat feces, urine and bird waste at a storage facility in Minneapolis.
