Slovakia introduces gasoline quotas for the population

Slovakia became the first European country to introduce fuel rationing for the population against the background of a jump in oil prices due to the war in the Middle East and specific problems with supplies within the country.

Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that each car owner will be able to refuel over the next month for no more than 400 euros. Carriage of canisters is prohibited, with the exception of 10 liters, which will be included in this limit.

For foreigners with non-resident license plates, the tariff will be calculated as the average between prices in neighboring Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic. The sale of oil and petroleum products to companies outside the country is completely prohibited.

Slovakia has emerged as a “fuel tourism” destination in recent days after the government imposed a price cap on gasoline.

At the same time, like Hungary, Slovakia depends on supplies through the Russian Druzhba pipeline, which has stopped pumping on the territory of Ukraine. Both countries accuse Kyiv of deliberately disrupting supplies in order to deprive Russia of income.
