The Lebanese cellist Mahdi Sàhêli shared a video on his social networks in which he appears playing among the rubble in the south of Beirut, an image that has been described as devastating and that quickly went viral internationally.
The recording shows him in the Dahiyeh district, one of the areas most affected by the recent bombings, where he performs Andante, by the Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian.
There, between collapsed buildings and streets covered in their remains, the scene contrasts with the performance of the musician, who remains standing in the middle of the destruction, focused on a piece that barely seems to hold in the air.
This interpretation occurs in a context of escalating conflict in the region. Since the beginning of this month, Israeli airstrikes against Lebanon have left more than 850 people dead and at least 2,100 injured, according to the country’s health authorities. Added to this is the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people due to the continuation of the bombings.

In this scenario, Mahdi Sàhêli’s action is interpreted as an act of cultural resistance. According to records from his own publications, the musician has carried out similar interventions in spaces affected by violence, with the purpose of “expressing solidarity with the impacted communities.”
Although the video does not include statements, its circulation triggered reactions on social networks. There were Internet users who compared the scene with symbolic episodes of popular culture, such as the Titanic orchestra or the movie The pianist, while others highlighted the contrast between the music and the war environment.
Comments of a political nature also emerged that transfer the image to the debate about the actors involved in the conflict, including Hezbollah and Israel’s role in the region.
The presence of the musician among the material remains of the city refers to a recurring practice in contexts of war: that of art as a form of testimony.
