Larissa Iapichino and Mattia Furlani won the silver medal in the women’s and men’s long jump respectively at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland. The 23-year-old Tuscan from Fiamme Oro, reigning European indoor champion at Apeldoorn 2025, wins the first world championship medal in her career by jumping 6.87 metres. Gold to the Portuguese Agate De Sousa, gold in 6.92 and bronze to the Colombian Natalia Linares, with 6.80. For Italy it is the fourth podium in the Polish event after the gold medals of Andy Diaz (triple), Nadia Battocletti (3000 meters) and Zaynab Dosso (60 meters).
Furlani, on the other hand, was in the lead with 8.39, equaling his personal best, until the last jump when the Portuguese Gerson Baldè, who had always been off the podium, found the gold jump with 8.46. Furlani attempted the shot on the last jump but missed which gave the gold to the Lusitanian. Third place for the Bulgarian Bozhidar Saraboyukov with 8.31.
“It was close to the gold but all in all I liked the second part of the race and I fought, then it’s always a question of centimeters. In that jump there was a lot of determination, a lot of desire to go and get the medal, I felt very emotionally involved and that’s what sport should convey, emotions. I thought I had a sort of curse with the World Championships because something always happened but today, despite my usual ‘laughs’, I finally managed to achieve this goal”, Iapichino’s words after the race. “I’m not an early riser and I had to try to adapt: on the first jump I was too low, on the second far away, on the third nothing and I told myself to wake up. Here in Torun I made my debut in the national team at the 2021 European Indoor Championships and so far I’ve had a complicated relationship with this arena, happy to have made peace with it. And I’ll be able to get those five centimeters back in the summer, at the European Championships in Birmingham”, she adds.
