According to a report in the British “Telegraph” newspaper, the ministers plan to speed up the pace of divorces significantly, in an attempt to reduce an unprecedented load of over 100,000 pending appeals in the system. Many of those rejected asylum seekers continue to stay in hotels these days, a reality that costs the British taxpayer millions of pounds.
To implement the move, the British Home Office is making use of laws drafted during Tony Blair’s Labor government in the early 2000s. Government officials have identified 25 countries defined as “safe”, including India, Brazil, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Albania and even Ukraine. Official figures show that over 14 thousand rejected asylum seekers or foreign criminals arrived last year from these countries alone. Once their request is defined under the law as “baseless”, they are denied the right to government housing and are required to leave voluntarily with funding for their flight, or face forced deportation.
The rigid approach led by Mahmoud threatens to ignite an internal rebellion in the ranks of the ruling Labor Party. Senior figures in the left wing of the party, including Angela Rayner, have already sharply criticized the reform and called the plan “un-British”. On the other hand, the Minister of Border Security and Asylum, Alex Norris, supported the move in an interview with the “Telegraph” and said that it was a “firm but fair” approach. According to him, “working citizens who pay taxes should not support people with idle lawsuits, many of whom are despicable criminals.”
“Forcing people to leave the UK before they have been given the chance to challenge flawed decisions risks sending them back into situations where they may face real danger,” Hussein warned, calling on the government to improve the initial decision-making process rather than rush to deport.
