One step forward, two steps back in the construction of the Berlin Modern

The opening of the new capital museum “Berlin Modern” will most likely be postponed further. This emerges from the semi-annual report from Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer to the Bundestag’s Budget Committee on the progress of the construction work, which meets in private on Wednesday. The document is available to the regional editorial team of t-online in Berlin.

Accordingly, during the course of work on the shell, “extensive moisture damage” occurred on new concrete surfaces, particularly on the lower floors. The main reason for this is the high humidity last year.

After analyzing the damage, a renovation concept was commissioned, although the results are not yet available. Therefore, no precise statement can yet be made about a possible correction to the construction schedule. However, “significant effects and a delay of several months are to be expected,” says Weimer’s report.

The “Berlin Modern” museum will probably open much later

It is not yet possible to determine whether the construction will be more expensive because of the moisture damage. The opening of the new museum was actually planned for 2029. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation had previously canceled the original planned opening in 2028.

When asked by the Tagesspiegel, a spokesman for the State Minister confirmed the half-yearly report and “that there was moisture damage to the shell of the ‘Berlin Modern’ museum, which will also have an impact on the construction process.” Since the Budget Committee meets in private, the report is also considered non-public and therefore remains officially secret.

The new “Berlin Modern” museum is intended as an extension of the neighboring Neue Nationalgalerie on the Kulturforum. On the one hand, works from the Neue Nationalgalerie from the 20th century will be shown in the new building. On the other hand, the cultural forum in the Tiergarten district of Berlin will be given new splendor by the new museum.
