Jensen Huang: ‘Super intelligence AGI has appeared’

In a podcast broadcast on March 23, computer scientist Lex Fridman mentioned that Nvidia CEO once said that the timeline of artificial super intelligence, or artificial general intelligence (AGI), depends on the definition. Fridman agrees and asks, if we define AGI as an AI system that “can basically do what Jensen Huang did, found, grow, and run a successful technology business worth over a billion dollars,” then when – 5, 10, 15, 20 years from now – will AGI become a reality.

Mr. Huang replied: “I think right now. I think we have achieved AGI already.”

According to this understanding, he explains, AI does not need to build anything sustainable. It doesn’t have to maintain people management, board operations or long-term business, it just needs to reach the billion dollar mark once.

He describes a scenario in which an AI creates a simple web service application, becomes popular, is used by a few billion people for 50 cents each, and then quietly disappears. He points to the dot-com bubble as a precedent, arguing that most websites back then were no more complex than what AI agents can create today. However, he asserted: “The probability of 100,000 such actors building Nvidia is 0%.”

Theo The VergeAGI is still defined quite vaguely and inconsistently, causing much debate in the technology world. However, the term generally refers to AI that is equal to or superior to humans, which is much broader than the definition in Huang and Fridman’s podcast.

In February, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, told Forbes: “We’ve basically built AGI, or very close to it.” However, he explained this statement as “spiritual” and not literal, because AGI will be the synthesis of many medium-sized breakthroughs, instead of a single major breakthrough. Meanwhile, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, commented that the world is still very far from achieving AGI.

Advanced AGI is expected to be able to operate organizations or make strategic decisions that are traditionally done by humans, while critics fear it will negatively impact public health, jobs and cause many other problems.
