Skicross star Maier misses a coup in the overall World Cup

Ski cross Olympic champion Daniela Maier missed the turning point in the fight for the overall World Cup. The 30-year-old took second place behind Sandra Näslund in the penultimate race of the winter in Gällivare, Sweden, and once again has to leave the big crystal ball to the local hero. Näslund celebrated her tenth win of the season and secured triumph in the overall World Cup for the fifth time.

Maier from the Black Forest started the race 175 points behind Näslund. The chances of turning the tide in the ball fight were slim anyway. Winning the overall World Cup is still one of the Germans’ big goals. She won gold at the Olympics in Italy in February and won bronze in a dramatic competition in China in 2022.

Among the men, Kilian Himmelsbach surprised with third place in Gällivare. It was the first World Cup podium finish ever for the 23-year-old German.
