12 tons of KitKat snacks were stolen in Europe; Fear for Easter

12 tons of KitKat chocolate bars were stolen last week during their transport in Europe. The Swiss food giant Nestlé, which owns the brand, told the AFP news agency today (Saturday) that it was a shipment of 413,793 units of the new series of chocolate. The theft occurred while the goods were being transported between the production site and the distribution points.

According to the company’s announcement, the truck left a factory in central Italy and was supposed to reach its destination in Poland. Currently, the vehicle and its contents have not yet been located and the company has defined the incident as acts of robbery. “We always encourage people to take a break with KitKat,” a company spokesperson said. “But it seems that the thieves took the message literally and ran away with more than 12 tons of chocolate.”

Nestlé warned that the disappearance of the shipment could lead to a shortage of snacks on the shelves. According to the company, consumers may have difficulty finding their favorite chocolate ahead of Easter, which is accompanied by high demand. The company also stated that the stolen snacks may reach unofficial sales channels throughout European markets.

Nestlé clarified that the stolen goods can be tracked by scanning unique codes that appear on each snack. In case a match is found during the inspection, the scanner will receive clear instructions on how to alert the company, which will forward the evidence to the appropriate authorities. The investigation of the incident continues in close cooperation with the local police and supply chain partners.
