6 common eye problems in women after age 50

Women after 50 years old are susceptible to dry eyes and have an increased risk of glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration due to hormonal changes.

When reaching the age of 50, a woman’s body undergoes many endocrine and physiological changes related to menopause. While issues like hot flashes, mood swings or osteoporosis often get attention, eye health is easily overlooked. The decline in estrogen hormone after menopause can significantly affect vision and eyes.

Dry eye syndrome

This is a common condition in postmenopausal women. Hormones such as estrogen and androgen help maintain the tear film – the protective layer that keeps the eyes moist and smooth. When hormones decrease, the quantity and quality of tears also decline.

People with dry eyes may feel burning, scratchy as if there is a foreign object in the eye, red eyes, and sensitivity to light. In some cases, there is also excessive tearing due to reflex stimulation from dryness. Treatment usually includes preservative-free artificial tears, omega-3 supplements, or anti-inflammatory eye drops as prescribed. Early treatment helps avoid corneal damage.

Increased risk of cataracts

Age is the main risk factor for cataracts, and women tend to develop them earlier than men. This is a condition in which the lens (the eye’s natural lens) gradually fades, causing blurred vision, glare, seeing halos around lights, and requiring frequent replacement of glasses.

After menopause, decreased estrogen can increase oxidative stress in the eyes, accelerating this process. When vision is clearly affected, lens replacement surgery is an effective treatment method.

Glaucoma

Women over 50 years old are at high risk of glaucoma – a disease that damages the optic nerve, often related to glaucoma. Hormonal changes can affect the flow of aqueous humor in the eye, increasing intraocular pressure. This disease often progresses silently, with initial loss of peripheral vision, so it is easy to ignore.

Regular eye exams, intraocular pressure measurements, and visual field testing are important. Early detection allows treatment with medication, laser or surgery to prevent permanent vision loss.

Age-related macular degeneration

After age 50, the risk of macular degeneration increases, especially in women, due to reduced protection from hormones. The disease affects the macula – the central area of the retina that helps see details clearly. Patients may see straight lines distorted, blurry spots or dark areas appear in the center of vision. There are two forms: the dry form progresses slowly and the wet form is more severe, requiring intraocular injections to control.

Diabetes and retinal complications

After menopause, the risk of diabetes increases due to metabolic changes. This entails the risk of diabetic retinopathy – which can seriously affect vision. Even if there are no symptoms, patients still need to have their eye fundus examined periodically every year to detect damage early.

Old vision

Presbyopia is a natural change with age, making it difficult for the eyes to adjust when looking up close due to the lens being less flexible. People with the disease often have to hold books away when reading or need brighter light. Reading glasses or progressive lenses are a common solution.

After menopause, eye care becomes more important to maintain vision. Women should have regular eye exams every 1-2 years or annually if they have a medical condition such as diabetes or risk of glaucoma, wear UV-protective glasses, eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and maintain exercise.
