According to reports, Pakistan acted as a secret conduit and its foreign minister confirmed that it had passed on a 15-point American peace plan to Iranian officials. However, experts warn that the diplomatic move is fraught with risks for Islamabad. If it turns out that the US is using the talks only to buy time for extensive military preparations for ground action, Pakistan will be accused by Tehran of collusion and lose its credibility.

At the same time, the complex move serves internal purposes. Pakistan is facing an acute cost of living crisis, energy shortages and a renewed war against the Taliban movement.
