Football: “intoxicated fan” dies after falling from a stand before the match between Mexico and Portugal

The party was ruined. On Saturday, Mexico welcomed the Portuguese football team, deprived of Cristiano Ronaldo (injured hamstring), for a preparation match for the 2026 World Cup – scheduled for June 11 to July 19 – of which he will be one of the organizers with the United States and Canada.

The opportunity for Mexicans to celebrate with great fanfare the reopening – after two years of renovation work – of the legendary Azteca stadium. But the event was mourned and marked by the death of a supporter, who fell from a stand just before the match kicked off.

“An intoxicated fan tried to go down from the second to the first level by jumping from the outside and fell to the ground floor,” Civil Security detailed in a press release.

The match was also the scene of numerous demonstrations, around the stadium, with various demands in order to give visibility to the families of missing people, to groups against gentrification or even to defend the animal cause.

On the field the two teams neutralized each other (0-0). Author of a good recovery, the Portuguese striker of PSG Gonçalo Ramos, starting at the kick-off, saw his shot pushed back by the post (26th). His Parisian partners Vitinha, João Neves and Nuno Mendes also took part in the meeting.

The venue which crowned Pelé in 1970 and Maradona in 1986 will host five World Cup matches this summer, including the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on June 11.
