Europe is a direct threat to Israel following the death penalty law for terrorists

N12 learned today (Monday) that senior European officials are having feverish talks with their Israeli counterparts at the highest levels in order to stop the death penalty legislation for terrorists, which is expected to be voted on in the Knesset this evening. “Israel is racing towards a moral abyss and we will not be able to stand against it,” say the sources. “There is not even an amnesty option in the law that creates two different legal systems – for Jews and Arabs,” they accuse.

At the top of the sanctions in Europe they are considering: canceling the association agreement or suspending parts of it, such as trade agreements, technological-economic-scientific cooperation and the suspension of the political dialogue. MK Merav Ben Ari, head of the delegation to the Council of Europe received the message about the Council of Europe.

Furthermore, an hour ago an application from the Council of Europe was placed on the Knesset’s desk, a body in which Israel received observer status in its Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) as well as in its various committees.

Thus, if the death penalty legislation is indeed approved (even if in a watered-down version), a process of suspending Israel’s status in the Council of Europe and the organization’s parliamentary assembly will begin. The initial hearing has already been scheduled for April 22 (as a more general hearing on the abolition of the death penalty) and according to estimates, a vote and a final decision on the matter is expected to take place in the summer session of the SPR (June 22-26), so it is a relatively quick process.

This would mean an immediate and sweeping suspension of Israel and the Knesset from all activities of the organization and the SPR. Letters on the subject – to our understanding – were sent to the Speaker of the Knesset from the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and the President of the new Main Assembly.
