Germany promotes: the comprehensive move to remove immigrants

Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Mertz, said yesterday (Monday) that he and the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Shara, hope that about 80% of the Syrians living in Germany will return to their country within three years. After a meeting with Al-Sharia in Berlin, Mertz said that more than a year after the end of the war, the situation in Syria “has fundamentally changed”, and therefore “the need for defense must be re-examined”.

“A reliable and orderly system must be established for the return of the Syrian refugees from Germany. They have an important role in the reconstruction of Syria,” said Martz. During the Syrian civil war, almost a million Syrians found refuge in Germany. However, not many details were given on how the refunds will be made.

Mertz’s government is taking a firmer line towards refugees and immigrants, against the backdrop of political encirclement and the strengthening of support for the far-right AfD party, which places great emphasis on the field of illegal immigration.

According to Martz, in the first stage, priority will be given to returning “those who no longer have the right of legal residence”, especially criminal offenders. But he noted that further returns are expected in the future. “Looking at the next three years, as A-Shara expressed his hope, about 80% of the Syrians currently living in Germany are expected to return to their homeland,” said Mertz.

He added that many of the Syrian refugees made a “significant contribution” to Germany, but most of them want to return home, where they will play an important role in the reconstruction of Syria in the coming years. The two leaders admitted that some Syrians will indeed remain in Germany. Mertz said that it is in Germany’s interest that Syrian doctors and therapists can stay if they wish.

A-Shara said that Syria will not forget how Germany opened its doors to refugees during the war. “We are proud that the Syrians quickly learned to contribute to society,” said the Syrian president. “We are working with our friends in the German government to establish a ‘circular’ immigration model.” According to him, this model “will allow Syrians to contribute to the reconstruction of their homeland without giving up the stability and life they have built here, for those who choose to stay.”

However, Francesca Brentner of the opposition Green Party said that for many returning to Syria is not possible, due to a lack of infrastructure and an unstable security situation. According to her, many Syrians are “deeply rooted” in Germany, hold essential jobs and their children attend schools.

Many of the Syrians in Germany arrived during the 2015 refugee crisis, after former Chancellor Angela Merkel decided not to close the borders to those fleeing the war. During the Syrian civil war, almost a million Syrians found refuge in Germany.

“We will manage to deal with it,” Merkel said at the time. For some of her supporters it was a pragmatic statement of intent, but it also became a political burden for her. Merkel was widely criticized, and many saw it as an invitation to mass immigration. Since then, far-right AfD parties have grown stronger in Germany and throughout Europe, with extensive anti-immigration campaigns. Today, the issue of immigration is one of the most central factors in European politics, and many governments are imposing stricter restrictions.
