As expected, Tottenham Hotspur have signed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach. The 46-year-old Italian is supposed to initially save the traditional London club from going into the second division. Spurs are in 17th place in the table and are just one point away from the relegation zone. De Zerbi is Spurs’ third coach this season after Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.
“Our short-term goal is to climb the Premier League table. That will be our full attention until the last whistle of the season,” said De Zerbi. The ex-professional signed “a long-term contract”, the term was not mentioned.
Tudor only in office for six weeks
The club parted ways with the Dane Frank, who was signed last summer with high hopes, in February due to the disappointing season. His successor Tudor, who was only brought in as an interim coach, had to leave after just six weeks. Under the Croatian, Tottenham only got one point from five games in the Premier League.
De Zerbi had already made a name for himself in the Premier League as a coach at Brighton & Hove Albion when he led the club to the European Cup for the first time in 2023. He most recently worked at Olympique Marseille, with whom he became runner-up in 2025. He left the club in February after a 5-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. According to reports, there were previously differences of opinion with the club management.
De-Zerbi-Debut in Sunderland
The Italian coach will make his debut on the sidelines at eleventh-placed AFC Sunderland on April 12th. Afterwards, Tottenham welcomes De Zerbi’s former club Brighton. In the remaining seven league games there are also difficult games against Aston Villa, Chelsea and Everton FC.
