Gmail, launched in 2004, has become over the years one of Google’s most central services, with billions of users worldwide. Despite many changes in design, security and functions, one thing remains constant, almost unchangeable, the email address itself. Until now, those who wanted a new address had to open an entirely new account, a cumbersome move that required transferring contacts, connected services and digital habits.
Now Google is changing this rule. Users can enter the account settings, select the personal information category, and then enter the option of changing the Google account address. If the option is available to them, you can update the username and get a completely new address. However, there are some limitations. Changing the username is only possible once every 12 months, so it is not an action that can be performed often. On the other hand, Google maintains complete continuity, all old emails, files and settings remain as they are, without the need for transfer or backup.
One of the most prominent advantages of the move is that the old address does not disappear. It is saved as an alternate address, so that people who continue to send emails to it can still reach the user. Meanwhile, you can also connect to Google services with both addresses, the old and the new, which makes the transition easier and prevents loss of access to linked accounts.
The move may also affect the world of work. An email address is sometimes a person’s first business card in front of employers, colleagues and customers. The option to update it to a cleaner, professional name may improve the digital image, especially for those who opened the account at a young age with nicknames or unofficial names.
On the other hand, there are also open questions. At this point the option is only available to users in the United States, and it is not clear when it will expand to the rest of the world. Also, not all accounts will immediately receive the option, since it is a phased launch. Either way, this is one of the most significant changes in Gmail in recent years, one that touches the core of users’ digital identity. For many users this is a rare opportunity to delete an old awkward name and update your online presence to better match who you are today.
