Athens – Waves over six meters high, schools closed, ferries no longer running. A violent storm brings life to a standstill in the southern Aegean. The authorities warned people in many regions – including Athens – via SMS.
The warning is: “Stay at home if possible.” The heaviest rain is expected until Wednesday midnight, but the overall storm is expected to last until Thursday evening. It is expected to rain as much as usual in three winter months combined – an exceptional extreme weather situation, warn meteorologists.
Schools in online mode
Schools at all levels remain closed in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands such as Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes and Kos. The students are learning from home instead, Greek Radio reported.
Hurricane whips across the sea
Many ferries no longer run because the strong winds are too dangerous. Winds reach up to 120 kilometers per hour in the southern Aegean. In the southeast of the Aegean, waves are towering over six meters high, local media reported.
The bad weather front is expected to last until Thursday evening, according to weather experts.
