Iraq began exporting oil through the port of Banias, located on the Mediterranean coast of Syria. According to the Syrian Oil Company, 299 tank trucks with oil are being sent through the Al-Tanf border crossing.
“The initiative will help stabilize energy markets and strengthen Syria’s role as the region’s Mediterranean gateway,” company spokesman Safwan Sheikh Ahmad said. Note that two border crossings between Syria and Iraq resumed operation on March 31.
Since the outbreak of hostilities, Iran has imposed a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass. This led to an increase in prices for energy products and forced US President Donald Trump to temporarily lift sanctions against the Russian fuel industry.
