Media: American fighter shot down over Iran

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not provide further details. The Pentagon and US Central Command did not respond to requests for comment.

Two U.S. officials told NBC that the plane shot down in Iran was a two-seat F-15 fighter jet.

Earlier, the Iranian headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya issued a statement that an F-35 aircraft (American, judging by the circulated photos) was shot down in the Markazi province in central Iran. The pilot is said to be seriously injured or killed. The IRGC-affiliated Fars agency writes that a symbol was found on the wreckage of a downed F-35 fighter jet indicating that it was based at Lakenheath airbase in the UK. Neither the IDF nor CENTCOM commented on the information. Previously, the IRGC has repeatedly announced the defeat of aircraft over Iran. Until now, all such reports have been refuted.
