Vittorio Messori, funeral on Saturday 11th in the Abbey of Maguzzano

I funeral of the writer and journalist Vittorio Messoriwho died on the evening of Good Friday in his home in Desenzano sul Garda, will be held on Saturday 11 April, at 9.30, in the Maguzzano Abbey, in the municipality of Lonato del Garda, in the province of Brescia. The funeral will be celebrated by the bishop of Verona, Monsignor Domenico Pompili, Rosalia ‘Rosi’ Bontà, the personal assistant of the author of the international bestseller “Ipotesi su Gesù”, announced to Adnkronos.

For Messori that Abbey was a point of reference for work and reflection: he also had his studio there, where he wrote his books. In that same place he promoted an ‘open-air church’, which he christened the “Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Ulivi”. This is how Messori described having discovered the abbey of Maguzzano: “The cloister is among the most beautiful things of the Lombard Renaissance and the church, contemporary, has a singular harmony and charm but above all I felt the charm of the place, still surrounded by greenery. I soon became friends with the religious people of the community of Don Giovanni Calabria, founder of the congregations of the Poor Servants and the Poor Servants of Divine Providence. As time passed Maguzzano ‘got inside me’. Thanks to the generous friendship of Don Calabria’s children I was able to occupy some rooms where I installed the study, the archive and the most commonly consulted books”.

The funeral chapel will be set up on Friday 10 April, from 9am to 12pm and from 3pm to 6pm, in the Farewell Hall of Desenzano sul Gardathe town where Messori had lived for some time. Also next Friday, at 6.30 pm, the Holy Rosary for the deceased will be celebrated at the Maguzzano Abbey. After the funeral, Messori’s body will be buried in the Treviglio cemetery (Bergamo), in the family tomb of his wife, Rosanna Brichetti, who passed away four years ago on Holy Saturday.
