Costa considers “illegal and unacceptable” the attacks on energy facilities and insists on a diplomatic solution in Iran

The President of the European Council, António Costa, considered this Monday that any attack on energy facilities is “illegal and unacceptable”, reiterating that the end of the war in Iran only requires a diplomatic solution when the deadline given by the US President, Donald Trump, to launch massive attacks against civilian structures if Tehran does not agree to an agreement that includes the reopening of the Hormuz Pass.

“After five weeks of war in the Middle East, it is clear that only a diplomatic solution will address its root causes,” said the community leader in a message on networks in which he stressed that attacks on civil infrastructure, including energy, are “illegal and unacceptable.”

“This applies to Russia’s war in Ukraine and it applies everywhere. The Iranian civilian population is the main victim of the Iranian regime. They would also be the main victim of an expansion of the military campaign,” he warned.

The message from the former Portuguese prime minister comes when Trump has threatened to destroy all infrastructure in Iran, including power plants and desalination plants, if the Islamic Republic does not agree to unblock the Strait of Hormuz.

In this sense, Costa has warned that the escalation of the conflict “will not achieve a ceasefire or peace.” “Only negotiations will do it, particularly ongoing efforts led by regional partners,” he reflected, at a time when Pakistan and other actors in the environment are negotiating a truce in the offensive.

In this way, he has conveyed that the European Union urges Iran to immediately end its attacks against countries in the region and allow the restoration of full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
