Meta is preparing the launch of its first proprietary AI models, although it will offer open versions later

Meta will soon launch its new proprietary artificial intelligence models after betting on open source with the Llama family, although it is expected that there will be open versions later.

The technology company is preparing to launch the first AI models under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, with which they will maintain the consumer focus with the intention of democratizing this technology.

These models will be the first owners to launch, after the Llama models were distributed with an open source licenseso that any developer could work with them and modify them according to their needs.

The change in strategy is because they want to keep some parts exclusive and make sure that no new risk levels are introducedas indicated by sources familiar with the matter to Axios and reported by Europa Press. It is expected that later there will be open versions of these same models.

This new family is being developed internally under the name Avocado, which is part of the so-called frontier models, that is, those with a performance similar to or superior to that of humans for carrying out tasks.

Its launch was initially scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, although it has been delayed due to not meeting expectations with performancecompared to Gemini 3.
