In full training before the Augusta Masters, the Spaniard attempted an improbable shot at hole number 16 by ricocheting his ball off a body of water before it flew into the hole for an exceptional “hole-in-one”.

This Monday, Bryson DeChambeau did the same with one exception: the ball did not end up in the hole. It nevertheless crossed the body of water and finished its race at the edge of the green, not far from the flag. A dazzling move that made his training partners smile and the audience, who always appreciate innovative attempts, belch.

“It’s very random”

However, don’t expect to see this move again in competition from Thursday, it’s very unlikely. In 2020, Jon Rahm did not try it again, despite his very successful attempt in training. “It’s very random, you have an 80% chance that your ball stays in the water,” former golfer Thomas Levet told us at the time. All it takes is for the ball to hit a wave for it to run aground. We never work on it in training, it’s really a shot that you hit without pressure, to have fun. »

In 2009 and 2012, the Fijian Vijay Singh and the German Martin Kaymer also achieved this ricochet shot on hole number 16 at Augusta, which is therefore the usual scene for this type of exploit. However, it remains no less sublime to look at.
