Residents of Desinić in tears after the death of their favorite neighbor Srećko: ‘The kindness of a big heart’

On Easter Monday, an event was held there, organized by the Museum of Croatian Zagorje, Veliki Tabor Palace, and the Kubura Society of Desini Kubura. After the introductory part, there was a demonstration of traditional holster loading and the way of shooting, and then the line-up around the castle accompanied by shots. But instead of joy came a shock. The visitors present watched the routine movements of the experienced bagpiper, not suspecting that a second of inattention or a fatal spark would turn a sunny afternoon into a scene of horror. Emergency helpć she arrived quickly, but there was no escape for the unfortunate man.

– It never occurred to us that something like that could happen. None of us had any professional training to load a holster, let alone a cannon. This knowledge is passed on between us, but so far there have been no tragedies – tells us the interlocutor who asked for anonymity, while the others did not want to comment on the tragedy.

In silence, they collected what was left of the event from the grass. They were slowly putting the equipment in the cars, their eyes fixed on the floor.

– Our assumption is that it sparked while he was stuffing gunpowder into the barrel. And only a spark is needed for the cannon to fire – the interlocutor tells us while showing the place where the cannon was standing.

In its place, you can see a gray spot and smell the strong smell of gunpowder. The black marks on the ground and the smell of burning reminded for a long time of the moment when the joy died down under the walls of the castle. Hours later, police investigators were picking up tracks and measuring distances, trying to understand why the mechanism failed at that fateful moment. Many say goodbye to Srećk.

– You loved oldtimers tractors, you also loved your cannon, the company of Kubura, you loved people, but they also loved you… You were a great good person, a man with a big heart. Unfortunately, dear Srećko, in our last conversation you told me: ‘Ž life is unpredictable, today you are here, tomorrow you are gone’. Unfortunately, as of today, you are gone… My dear friend, may the angels watch over you, rest in peace and rest in peace, this lump of Zagorje – reads one of the many farewell messages.

A white lantern is burning in the window of his house, and the place is silent. One neighbor agreed to talk to us and kept emphasizing how good Srećko was.

– He has no wife, no children, but he had a family with whom he was happy. Who loved him as much as he loved them. Everyone is in shock. Fortunately, he was hardworking, he worked with metal, but he also helped his neighbor in the funeral home. I would help everyone who would helpć should have – the neighbor tells us through tears. As he says, he was a passionate tractor lover and an experienced carpenter, a member of the local association for more than 30 years. In his workshop, he spent thousands of hours repairing old tractors and working on metal parts. Locals say that Srećko knew every screw on his pets on all four wheels and that he invested his whole self in every renovation.

– A role model for everyone, never drank, never caused problems. He painted his tractors – the neighbor tells us through tears. Everyone who knew him is saying goodbye to him on social networks and sharing photos from past meetings, remembering the man who always had a smile for everyone.

A touching message was also published on the Facebook page of Općina Desinić.

– Unfortunately, from today you no more, my dear friend, may the angels watch over you. Head of the Municipality of Desini Dražen Šurbek told Nova TV that the place does not remember such a tragedy. He pointed out that Juričan was a long-time member of the Kubura society with more than 30 years of experience and well-known and respected in the local community.

Police details of this tragedy are not yet known. The Krapina-Zagorje police received a report from the 112 Center on Monday at 3:15 p.m. In the town of Hum Košnički, near the Veliki Tabor Palace, a cannon killed one person.

The circumstances will be determined by the investigation and criminal investigation that follows, they said briefly.

Dvor Veliki Tabor, which was supposed to be a place of gathering and tradition, momentarily became a symbol of a tragedy that will be remembered for a long time.
