A cruise ship runs aground off the island where ‘Castaway’ was filmed.

The ship, the MV Fiji Princess, carrying 30 passengers and 31 crew, ran aground on a reef near the uninhabited island of Monuriki, the Fiji Maritime Safety Authority said in a statement posted on social media.

The boat, which suffered serious damage and began taking on water after running aground on Saturday, remained stranded on Monday, according to local media reports.

According to the agency, all of the ship’s passengers were evacuated safely and returned to Port Denarau, on Fiji’s main island, along with most of the crew.

(A much better fate than Hanks’ character Chuck Noland, who was stranded alone on the island for four years after a cargo plane crash and was forced to make fires, hunt for food, and befriend an anthropomorphic volleyball named Wilson.)

According to the Maritime Safety Authority, authorities were working frantically to contain the 20,000 liters of fuel diesel aboard the Fiji Princess.

There was no indication that the fuel tanks had been damaged in the accident, but specialists were working to remove fuel from the ship and prevent any accidental contamination.

Blue Lagoon, the company that operates the ship, did not respond to a request for comment.

Speaking to other media outlets, he said a preliminary investigation revealed that the Fiji Princess encountered a strong and unexpected storm that caused the ship’s anchor to become stuck on a shallow reef.

The cruise company’s website advertises voyages of three to seven days in length, two of which include an overnight stop in Monuriki and a “visit to the filming location of Cast Away.”

According to travel blogs and visitor accounts posted on YouTube, the desert island features logs on the beach that form the word “Help,” as written by Hanks’ character in the film.

Monuriki is part of the picturesque Mamanuca Archipelago, a group of volcanic islands off the northwest coast of Fiji.

Known for its spectacular waters and rich marine life, the area has dozens of wreck dive sites, delicate reefs and vibrant ecosystems, including reef sharks, skipjack tuna and marine salmon.

The remote Mamanuca mountain range plays a pivotal role in Western pop culture.

Not only was it the setting for “Cast Away” in 2000, but more recently it has served as the backdrop for the television series “Survivor“, which has been filmed in the territory since 2016.

It is a well-known tourist destination, where local guides and cruise companies organize excursions around the archipelago, including “Castaway”-themed tours of Monuriki.

This situation has intensified efforts to contain any pollution from the Fiji Princess, amid fears that a fuel leak could damage surrounding reefs.

Authorities said that, as a precaution, they had transported oil spill containment equipment to the accident site and had contracted the services of a rescue specialist from Australia.
